"Martial Law is not a military takeover..."
- Ferdinand Marcos Sr in his television broadcast of
Proclamation 1081, September 1972.

Guised to quash communist insurgency in the Philippines,
human rights violations under Ferdinand Marcos’
dictatorship in the 1970s rendered hundreds of
thousands of dissenters incarcerated, tortured, missing,
or killed. The Marcoses eventually fled in exile as the
People Power Revolution (1986) gathered millions of
Filipinos to overthrow the oppressive government.
However, an ongoing machinery of historical revisionism
since the 2010s exposes the gullibility of the present-day
population into forgetting histories and glorifying this
dictatorship.

Hanggang sa Paglubog ng Araw (Until Sunset) protests
against this revisionism. Journalist Jim Laurie covered
the final moments of senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr
before his assassination in 1983. Juxtaposing sounds
from the assassination with Marcos’ TV broadcast, the
listener hears splices of sounds that attempt to stitch a
coherent narrative. Did this process stitch stories of truth
or of deceit? A resulting intense, noisy soundscape
interrogates even its own success.

Antoine de Saint-
Exupéry’s “sunset” allegory narrates the Little Prince
watching the sunset forty-three times from his little
asteroid home (Le Petit Prince, 1943) – are exhaustive
and sorrowful repetitions of correct histories really the
only means to combat disinformation?
